Olivia Kim is a senior in the Academy of Medical Science Technology at the Bergen County Academies and a violist at the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College, where she studies with Professor Anat Malkin Almani.

As a biology researcher with a strong interest in history, she hopes to explore public health by examining how social contexts interact with biological mechanisms to shape health outcomes. She has explored health equity through her research on reproductive autonomy in Guatemala, and the effect of diet on neurological health through Columbia’s BrainSTORM program. She earned awards for her research on spatial gene expression in Alzheimer’s disease and is a published author in the Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical Research.

Translating her research into a tangible community impact, Olivia advocates for health equity through Medi-Girls, an organization she founded to make health education more accessible. Through the initiative, she develops carefully researched, accessible brochures on women’s health.

Outside of research and advocacy, she is a passionate musician who champions youth participation in the arts. She is a finalist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Young Musicians Concert and a member of the New York Youth Chamber Music Program. She has earned first place in the Prodigy International Music Competition and Young Artists International Music Competition, along with a $13,000 merit scholarship.

Ultimately, her goal is to bring diverse perspectives into care and make it more accessible through interdisciplinary approaches.
